The Yorkshire Terrier, or "Yorkie" is a small terrier breed. This long-haired terrier is known for its playful demeanour and beautifully distinctive blue and tan coat. "Yorkies" as they are usually referred to are actually quite small dogs, perhaps not weighing more than a 6 or so pounds. Originally bred in Yorkshire England they were were bred by factory workers and only later did they become a breed that was found among the middle classes.

They are high spirited animals and they really do make for great guard dogs, but sometimes are difficult to train. Their coat needs constant attention and it is recommended that you keep the coat trimmed to help the "Yorkie" move around easily. You could expect a Yorkshire Terrier to live for up to 14 years.
