?Basenji
Whether your buying a new dog or simply looking for a shelter that will help you adopt a new pet, Insurance4Britain.com is the place to look for all your pet and pet insurance needs.
Basenjis are part of the hound group. They are descended from the pariah dogs, having tightly curled tails and only an annual time of being in season. They have always been recognised as companions of the Pharaohs as there are portraits of them in the Egyptian pyramids. The breed then moved to Central Africa where it was used to kill the reed rats that threatened the native livestock as well as to point, retrieve and drive game and track wounded prey. Overall, showing that they are superb hunting dogs.
They were than introduced into the UK by early African explorers in 1895 as the bark less dogs. Unfortunately they did not survive after contracting distemper, as did several more throughout the following years. Only in 1936 did a pair survive long enough breed a litter. Several attempts in the US failed because of the disease too, until the 1940?s. It is still common to find that breeding comes from Central African stock. They are alert and intelligent dogs, but also full of character and anxious. Thus, making them difficult to train. Early socialisation is essential, especially with other dogs, as they tendency to fight. But can gently fit into the role of a family pet.
They also have feline tendencies, being very clean and prone to self-grooming, they are also nearly odour free. An occasional groom with a glove to discard any loose hair will be sufficient. They have been known to climb trees and fences just as cats do. They are loyal and affectionate towards their owners, but aloof with strangers. They are not great guard dogs as their inability to bark proves them useless in this area. It is not wise to have other small pets with the Basenjis as their natural instinct to hunt prey will out.
Their lifespan is considered to be 14-16 years.
