There are 2 types of Collie, the Rough Collie and the Smooth Collie. They originate from Roman times and were probably bred from the Borzoi, Deerhound and Newfoundland. Today they are mainly derived from the Collie from Scotland. They were first used for sheep herding, but nowadays they are mainly companions. The Rough Collie is now best known as the character ?Lassie?, despite being one of the first original show dogs. They are also said to have been a favorite of Queen Victoria. The Smooth Collie is the only Collie breed without a long coat. They are a great family pet and can be very gentle and protective over children, especially the Rough Collie. They are good watchdogs, easy to train and obedient. Naturally the Rough Collie needs daily grooming and both require regular exercise. Their lifespan is considered to be 12-14 years.
