The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is an American breed of retriever and a gun dog. They are extremely hardy and tough. It is thought they originated from 2 puppies that were shipwrecked off Newfoundland in 1807. They proved to be very good at hunting in the freezing waters and were mated with local gundogs to produce the Chesapeake. They were then used to retrieve ducks from Chesapeake Bay. They are independent, courageous and loving dogs. They love the water and are especially good with children. They make an ideal family pet and are sound guardians. At this present time they are rare in the UK. Their lifespan is considered to be 12-13 years.
