The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest terrier breeds, originating in the Scottish Highlands and recognised as one of Scotland's earliest working dogs - used for hunting burrowing prey among the cairns. Although the breed had existed long before, the name Cairn Terrier was a compromise, after the breed was originally shown as one of the the Short-haired Skye terriers.
