The Bouvier des Flandres is a working dog. They were bred as herding dogs, yet their origin is unknown. All cattle herders were known as called bouviers and each area had their own name and type.
During World War 1 the Bouviers were largely wiped out, some of the rarer types were lost altogether. The only two to survive were the Bouvier des Flandres and the Bouvier de Ardennes. France and Belgium believe their origin lies with them. Most of the modern pedigrees relate back to Champion Nic de Sittengen, a dog owned by Captain Darby, whom ensured the continuity of the breed.
They are an intelligent dog, performing with devotion. They are stubborn so training and discipline must be continuous. Bouviers are calm and sensible, they make good family pets.
They are loyal and protective and obedient. Early socialisation with other pets and dogs is advised from an early age. They require a decent amount of exercise. Due to their very thick coats, they require daily grooming with particular attention to their beards and moustaches.
It is important to keep the undercoat is matt-free and the outer coat should be stripped at least twice a year. Their lifespan is considered to be 11-12 years.
