Borzois are part of the hound group. They were first developed from the Persian Greyhound in the 1600?s. It was crossed with the native Russian sheepdogs. They were bred to survive the harsh Russian winters and to protect their master from wolves.

Unfortunately after the Russian Revolution in 1917, many were destroyed because they were associated with the ruling class. The breed was then only rescued from extinction by those dogs given as gifts. Borzois are difficult to train. They are stubborn and prone to being disobedient, so it is essential that training is introduced at an early age.

They are good-natured, proud dogs, sometimes aloof. They are gentle and calm but nervous. They are reasonably good with children but do not like boisterousness. They can tolerate other like minded dogs, but nervous of them. Other pets, especially cats, must be introduced at an early age. They need regular grooming and moulting seasons will produce copious amounts of hair. They also need large open spaces to exercise. Their lifespan is considered to be 11-13 years.
