?The Bedlington Terrier

Whether your buying a new dog or simply looking for a shelter that will help you adopt a new pet, Insurance4Britain.com is the place to look for all your pet and pet insurance needs.

Bedlington Terriers are part of the terrier group. It has existed for about 200 years. They have a sheep like look and is believed to be a descendant of the Dandie Dinmont and Whippet. This has produced a lean, racy and assertive dog. Miners developed the breed in the Rothbury area of Northumberland during the 18th century for ratting and poaching. It is now however, rarely seen in the field. They are excellent hunters because of their sense of smell and hearing, as well as its speed and ability to ?go to ground.? It has been known to tackle badgers. Any owner should therefore ensure early socialisation with various other dogs and people, so as to avoid any problems with aggression. Once these comfortable social skills are established, the Bedlington Terrier, proves to be a lively, loyal and rewarding pet.

Bedlington Terriers are intelligent but have their own mind, so you must convince the dog that it wants to do what you want it to do. They will also need training so as to have stable relationships with other household pets. They will also try to determine their hierarchy with other smaller dogs, but will accept a larger dog more easily. They will act as good guard dogs as they will announce strangers until they are welcomed by the master. They also need a lot of physical and mental stimulation. So games and exercise are essential. They are also good with children. They do however need a lot of grooming, usually about 5 minutes of brushing daily and then combing weekly. Frequent trims are best every couple of months too. Their lifespan is considered to be 14-15 years.
