The Basset Hound is part of the hound group. They originated from France in the 1500's. Basset derives from the French word 'bas', meaning 'low'. They appear to have descended from the Bloodhound, the Foxhound and the Dachshund. However in the UK in the late 1800?s the breed blossomed from a pair from the Marquis de Tournon which were given to the Lord Galway of England in 1866, the litter went to Lord Onslow who proceeded to develop the superior pack by crossing further with the Coultreux pack from Normandy. Soon the English version of the Basset was developed.
The Bassett is a very spirited dog, having strong minds of their own. Therefore training can be difficult. They are also loving and sociable. They are calm, and yet playful, with a great sense of humour. They love children and get on well with other dogs and household animals. They are friendly towards anyone, so not best suited to being a guard dog, but will however bark loudly if sensing danger. They are best in company at all times and are as happy indoors as they are out. They do not require a lot of grooming, mainly only when moulting to remove loose and dead hair. Because of the height, or lack of it, they do tend to get quite mucky, but a thankfully easy to clean up. Their lifespan is considered to be 10-12 years.
