Alaskan Malamutes are a working dog, presently mainly used for sled-pulling and sled-racing, as well as companions. They are first thought to have originated in Alaska alongside the Inuit tribes. These habitants then developed the dog that was excellent for hauling heavy loads in the harsh weather and helping whilst hunting. The Alaskan Malamute, also shares its origin with breeds such as the Russian Samoyed, the Siberian Husky and the Eskimo dogs of Greenland and most astonishingly the Labrador. Any interbreeding with the wolf is always discouraged. What Malamutes do however lack in speed, they certainly make up for in power and strength and this is shown in their build. They are naturally alpha breeds and therefore with show little tolerance with other dogs, especially males of the same breed. It is essential that socialised early before being allowed to run free. They also need confident, experienced owners that are willing to train firmly. They are obedient and loyal dogs and best not used as guard dogs as they are so friendly they?d never deter an intruder! They get on well with children but there should always be supervision as they may accidentally cause a tumble. If they are introduced to other pets, then they usually accept them. Malamutes should never be left alone as they tend become sullen and withdrawn, which could cause behavioural problems. They need daily grooming and will shed heavily once a year and bitches twice during their seasons. They are reported to dog odour free so no need to be bathed frequently. Their lifespan is considered to be 10-12 years.

Make sure that you have adequate dog insurance to cover these things - they are more common than most people might think.
