The Affenpinscher originated in Germany and dates back to the seventeenth century. This is also one of the toy group's earliest breeds. Dogs of the Affenpinscher type have been known since about 1600 but these were somewhat larger, about 12 to 13 inches, and came in colours of grey, fawn, black and tan, grey and tan, and also red. White feet and chest were also common. The breed was created to be a ratter, working to remove rodents from kitchens, granaries, and stables. The breed predates and is ancestral to the Griffon Bruxellois (Brussels Griffon) and Miniature Schnauzer.?

Its name is derived from the German Affe (ape, monkey). The Affenpinscher is a small rough-coated monkey like dog, known lovingly as the monkey dog.

Affenpinscher often appears on lists of dogs that allegedly do not shed (moult). "There is no such thing as a non shedding breed." Frequent grooming reduces the amount of loose fur in the environment. They need to be groomed two to three times a week.

This loyal fun loving and playful little dog is very protective of family members they are active, adventurous and a curious breed. Affenpincshers are territorial when it comes to their food and toys so they are not recommended for very small children. But they often get along with other dogs and pets in the family. This breed is mostly quiet but shows no fear toward aggressors.
